  2. The sentence I decided to right about was Voltaire/Candide in chapter XII The old womens story. I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life.I picked this sentence because a women who has been through such a great deal and can still have a love for her life makes you wonder what some of us are lacking or needed that they gave up their lives so easily. She must have been an amazing women.

  3. In response to Coral's choice of quote: 'I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life" I too was greatly moved by this sentence. In all honesty I have had trouble really becoming interested in Voltaire/Candide. However, after reading Chapter 12 and espiecally this quote I was able to feel a bigger connection with the book. This quote connects all human beings in society today to the past. I believe that this is a quote we could all live by; even when life gets tough, we must have faith in life that we can make it through. I think thats what makes us truly human. This quote also represts the importance of expirience in life, just as the old lady in Chapter 12-13, expierences shape who we are.

  4. "The first person, who, having inclosed a piece of ground, bethought to himself of saying 'This is mine,' was the real founder of society." Rousseau

I chose this sentence because when I first read it, it made me laugh. It makes the idea of owning a part of nature seem silly, yet it has been the cause of so many wars and acts of violence throughout history. The truth of the foundation of civil society is a much more gradual process than Rousseau initially describes, but it just shows how man set himself up for a long life of inequality that is only worsened by the development of the human mind.

  6. "Four hundred yards from here you will find my mother cut into four pieces and lying under a heap of corpses" Rousseau

This quote was chosen because it shocked the reader into attention. The simplicity of the way such a horrific statement is made adds a kind of sick twist to the piece. The calmness of the tone in the piece also acts to intimidate the audience with an unnatural fear of the statement. This quote at the end of chapter 12 is a very deep and sadistic approach to story and the coversation. It acts in many ways to draw the reader in and is a very effective approch.
