"No man, by his own individual care and exertion, can secure himself from evil; he requires assistance" Voltaire.
I chose this sentence because i believe just that. Although this may not be what Voltaire is saying I believe that people can only get by so far by themselves and that they need the people around them to help them out. Some people may believe that by blocking out the world and secluding themselves they will do just fine. I think that with a little help from friends or even people just willing to lend a hand you can go a long way.

This is an interesting passage and your conclusion is reasonable, though what does Voltaire say about society? He seems to think it is not such a good thing, a "little help from your friends" kind of thing but a miserable situation.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that to get anywhere in life you are going to need some help somewhere. I also believe that you need to help a friend to be helped in life. some people are willing but others wont give a hand without a reason.
ReplyDeleteI really like this passage and i do feel that we can not get around without the help of others but like what proffesor Albert said, sometimes those people that we can not get around with can also make like horrible for someone else. There is no win situation with the help of others. We need them but sometimes they can make things miserable.

As we read in Candide, society is constantly feuding. There are many examples of violence and ravishing throughout the text. I think Voltaire is poking fun at the idea of society. So when he says, "no man can secure himself from evil; he requires assistance," I think he might mean assistance from individuals as opposed to larger groups/ideas. For instance, Candide does not kill anyone until after Pangloss has died. This could be an example - Pangloss, an individual, had a positive influence over Candide and offered assistance to keep Candide away from evil. After Pangloss' death, Candide was lost in a sense and could not keep himself from evil.

ReplyDeletea person can not not ask for help atleast once in their life. A person needs to surround themselves with only people who have their best intentions at heart to avoid evil so easily. The unfortunate truth is that people can mask their intentions from everyone. The only way to have no evil in a person's life is to examine the people around you.
ReplyDeleteI agree that sometimes there are those people around you that can only make a situation miserable, but like Ali said you have to learn to surround yourself with people who have the best intentions. There are always going to people who are negative about everything in life, you just have to realize early on who you need to get by in life and who is just going to make things worse.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what everyone is saying on the fact that everyone needs help from someone during their lifetime. Relying on others cannot always be such a good thing because people have a good intention with helping out, but do not always follow through.
ReplyDeleteThis goes with Lockes idea of having a government to protect the possessions of people from others that want it. For Locke he believes that everyone has a right to everything but protection is needed to secure possessions. In theory a social contract is usually the way that people come together to protect themselves from the evils of the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Megan, people who are just willing to lend a hand can go a long way. I also believe this sentence is true because how can one go through life without receiving help from any single person? Some individuals are capable of living their life without any help, but as for me, I enjoy helping others in need because I hope that people will return the favor to me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because, no matter how many different precautions a person takes, evil can still find them, and bad things can still happen. If a person has a friend or someone to rely on the can always turn to them for help.
ReplyDeleteI also try to help people when I can and it can spark a chain reaction, so they will do something for someone else and so forth. I don't believe anyone can get through life without having some form of assistance from another. Everything that occurs in the world happens because of someone or something's actions which cause reactions. So technically, no one can get through life completely on their own. One might be able to make decisions by themselves or do a task by themselves but they are being helped by something whether they want to or not.
